Dylan Thomas wrote Under Milk Wood as a radio play in 1954 and later adapted it for the stage. It
describes a day in the life of some local characters living in Llaregyb, a “rough and tumble” fishing village in Wales. The play starts with the dreams of the sleeping characters and then follows them through the day until “the thin night darkens” and sleep returns. The play moves swiftly between the quirky inhabitants, swept along by a torrent of poetical words and phrases which take you to a place filled with the magical realism of a dream.

The play begins: It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobblestreets silent and the hunched, courters'-and-rabbits' wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboat-bobbing sea.

We invite you to enjoy this play in the cool of the Concert Hall in Victoria Hall where the audience can be well spaced out. Although there is no longer an official mask mandate, we encourage you to wear a mask for the comfort and safety of yourself and others.

We are funded by our membership fees and donations from our generous audience members. We suggest $20 a person, but please feel free to pay what you can. Remember to bring cash; we don’t have debit or visa machines. Reservations are not necessary.
